Oradour-sur-Glane Is about 50 minutes drive away and is a monument of a village ransack by SS troops on 10th June 1944. A total of 642 people were killed and the village destroyed. To this day there is no universally accepted explanation as to why it happened. A new village was built after the war on a nearby site, but on the orders of the then French President, Charles de Gaulle, the original has been maintained as a permanent memorial and museum. It isn’t the easiest of visits and there is a lot to take in, but it is a fascinating place.
