Royan is just under 2 hours away from La Maison Bois, but is well worth a visit.  Royan is a seaside resort town on France’s Atlantic coast, at the mouth of the Gironde estuary. It has a long history as a seaside resort and benefits from a micro-climate like that on the Mediterranean coast.  The wonderful Atlantic coast beaches stretch for several kilometres either side of the town. There are child-friendly beaches near the town and the more wild unspoilt beauty of the Cote Sauvage where you can find some peace even in the height of summer.  The town also has belle epoque villas and modern, postwar architecture like the concrete Notre-Dame de Royan church. The grand Cordouan Lighthouse stands on an islet in the estuary, accessible by ferry.

From Royan you can even take the ferry across the Gironde to the vineyards and chateaux of the Médoc.  Or if you are feeling energetic, you could take part in the Marathon du Médoc.
