Both Tom and I have a love of France and have visited most departments on our holidays. As an Architect, Tom has always wanted to build his own house and trying to do this in the UK is very difficult. At the end of 2012, we decided to combine these two passions and embarked on a self-build project in the Charente. The result is La Maison Bois!
The process started when we visited a French property in show in London. Initially we went to look for a wreck that we could do up, but then noticed that there was a lot of land available in France that came with outline planning. This seemed like too good an opportunity to pass up. We started to look plots online and then took the decision to spend a week viewing. As Tom specialises in residential design this was a fantastic opportunity for him, although I did have quite a bit of input in the final design! He has always had an interest in sustainable architecture and we are both keen on sustainable living which definitely led the design process. We hope you enjoy you stay in the house and we look forward to hearing any comments you may have.
